Makalu Base Camp Trekking

Makalu is somewhat difficult but extremely rewarding trek. Makalu base camp trek offers a true wilderness experience the rugged, uninhabited terrain of Makalu-Barun National Park. The Makalu Barun National Park was established in 1992 as Nepal's eighth national park.

Makalu base camp is very much demanding, and an outstanding trek in eastern Nepal. The trek up to Makalu base camp visits one of the most remote and unfrequented areas of Nepal. The long trek and unspoiled terrain makes this trek a classic in its own. Makalu trek goes high up to 5,000m. Makalu trek is in remote area so hardly find some local tea shop and local houses but one can find incredible diversity and natural beauty.

Sherpa, Rai and Limbus are main habitants in Makalu area. Walking north up the Arun River to Sedwa and Num, you get to the upper Barun Khola valley for a close look at Mt.Makalu (8,463m)

To start Makalu base Camp, we have to take a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar in eastern Nepal. Then we have to follow a well defined trail along the Arun River or Arun valley. From the village of Num, we take northwest trail through small settlement and continue ascend in extremely remote upper area. The best season to trek Makalu area is autumn and spring time.
